The seventh instalment of Glenmorangie's highly anticipated annual Private Collection, 'Milsean' (pronounced meel-shawn, meaning 'sweet things' in Gaelic) has caused quite a stir with the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association). The whisky is part of an industry push to experiment with maturation techniques, with Glenmorangie's Dr Bill Lumsden at the forefront. Initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks for an undisclosed period of time, the finishing process under scrutiny saw the re-toasting of red wine casks sourced from the Duoro region in Portugal, resulting in an increased amount of caramelised sugars inside the oak - a questionable "flavour addition" as viewed by the SWA, which is not permitted in the production of Scotch Whisky. "Normally, the wine barrels are scraped clean before re-toasting and being used for finishing. Then we’d just kind of wait to see what sort of flavour profile we ended up with.” explains, Lumsden. Needless to say, the SWA did not put a halt to this release. The result is a malty, confectionary delight; "Extra-maturing Glenmorangie in heavily toasted red wine casks has allowed us to create a whisky recalling a bygone era". says Lumsden. Nose - Sweet candy-coated apples nectar toasted granola sweetened ginger and orange strips creme brulee fresh garnish. Taste - Sweet sweetened apple shell rock treats ginger and orange strips toasted and sugared peaches/nectarines black out apple strip/seed sharpness toward the end. Finish - Waiting peach/nectarine pleasantness blends and waits with the apple seed/skin sharpness. Sugar coated ginger hotness waits followed with a smidgen of severe oak. Score - 76/100 Last Considerations - This unquestionably had a decent nose pleasant toasted sugar notes as though you could smell somebody making creme brulee or a toasted/consumed sugar beat peach/nectarine. The taste on the sense of taste coordinates the nose aside from that like my past involvement in Glenmorangie I get this apple seed/strip harshness that sort of jumps out at you. Finish is entirely wonderful less the waiting harshness. I'd state this is even more a treat measure matched with a natural product pie or shoemaker or creme brulee.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Seaside fudge, coconut ice, blueberries and candied peels. Develops more 'fresh fruit' than 'candied fruit' with a drop of water.

Taste

Cinnamon spice begins to develop, alongside yellow plum, melon and more coconut. Subtly oak-y, but the focus here is on the fruity sweetness, which hints more towards orange segments as it goes on.

Finish

An intriguing balance of sweetness and spice (think strawberry laces and ginger snaps) finish it off.
