Distilled from grain grown by Rockside Farm on the coast of Islay, Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2007 celebrates the nuances of terroir within the island, brought out via Bruichladdich Distillery’s Victorian machinery and historic distillation processes. Bruichladdich Single Malt Whisky is made exclusively from unpeated barley grown on Rockside Farm on the maritime coast of Islay, providing a very different terroir to the central Islay-grown barley used in their 2009 release. After the grains are milled and mashed, they are fermented in the distillery's original washbacks, which are made of Douglas Fir. The wood from the washbacks absorbs heat generated during fermentation, and allows for a longer, slower fermentation process as compared to steel, resulting in a more flavorful and rich whisky. After fermentation, the wash is distilled twice through Bruichladdich's 130 year-old, 20-foot tall, diamond-shaped stills. The Victorian-era stills produce whisky that is notably floral and elegant. About the brand

From the shores of the famous whisky producing island of Islay, Bruichladdich is celebrated for producing some of the best spirit in Scotland. Using the distillery’s tall, narrow-necked stills to produce an elegant, floral and fruity house style, the Bruichladdich distillery delivers a wide range of cask-finished whiskies, many of which are non-traditional for whisky ageing, such as casks which used to hold Cognac, Jurançon and Pinot Gris. The distillery produces three peated single malts: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore, along with The Botanist gin. They mature and bottle all their spirit on the island, using only Scottish-produced barley and retaining Victorian-era equipment, including the only open-topped mash tun on Islay and the last remaining belt-driven mill in Scotland. Originally launched in 1881, Bruichladdich’s first notable owner was one William Harvey, who assumed control not long after the distillery was built and retained ownership until his passing in the 1930s. At this time, the distillery’s spirit was used primarily for blending. The next 60 years brought a variety of owners, including whisky brokers Ross and Coulter in the 1950s and AB Grant in the 1960s. Following this, the purchase of the site by Invergordon distillers (later to be purchased by Whyte & Mackay) brought great stability to the distillery, up until their sale of the company to Murray McDavid in 2000 for a lofty £6.5m. The new owners, steered by Mark Reynier and master distiller Jim McEwan (a former employee of Bowmore), transformed the distillery’s personality and fortune with their unique and innovative bottlings and style of packaging, many of which have gained worldwide recognition. Indeed, such was its success that it drew the attention of Rémy Cointreau, which bought the company in 2012 for £58m on the condition that it carried on with the same approach.. The result of the recent innovations is a range of silky peated malts with notes of oak. Truly an anytime whisky for fans of rich malted drams. This is definitely one for your spirit collections.

Tasting Notes

Nose

From the outset this is overtly floral and fruity. Slow distillation yet again brings out the best from the Islay grown Barley, the abundance of soft fruit notes and delicate floral style of this dram is shared with our past Islay grown releases. Typical Bruichladdich style fruit notes of crisp apple and ripe pear along with peach and dried apricot are further enhanced with lemon drops, grapefruit and orange zest. There is a vast array of flavour rising from this whisky as it opens further. The oak and cereal components come through after the fruit, pipe tobacco and vanilla notes mingle with barley sugar and caramel wafers, as ever a distinct marine tang hangs in the air.

Taste

A sweet spot in the maturation of an incredible whisky. A chance to see the elements at work as the young spirit showing green fruits, apple, pear and gooseberry transitions to peach, apricot and mango with the influence of time. The careful selection of casks holds this moment perfectly in balance as their contribution to the ageing of the spirit brings oak depth, vanilla and coconut sweetness and lemon/grapefruit zest without overpowering the sweetness of the malt or the profound cereal notes that come from the Islay grown barley. The structure is firm, the texture luxurious, carrying the DNA of this island.

Finish

The finish is about the fruit, dried apricot from the oak and lemon, kiwi and caramel wafer. A warm sand, marine note lingers as the Islay maturation tells its part of the story. As this whisky lingers on the palate it puts you in mind of the construction and structure to its form. Each element, distillation, time, cask and barley have a clear influence yet not one dominates another as this whisky reaches a crossroads in its development. This vintage is at the perfect stage to appreciate all that it is as it lays bare its DNA, its philosophy and its quality.
