Hudson was born by accident. And what a happy accident it’s proven to be!
In 2001, when the owners purchased the Tuthilltown Gristmill to open a rock climber’s ranch, the neighbors were far from impressed. So, they had to find another way to make use of this historic site. It was the 240 year history of the mill itself that inspired the decision to launch Hudson. Grain and water. The ingredients were there. So they decided to make whisky.
The two granaries were swiftly converted into the first whiskey distillery in New York State since Prohibition. And Hudson began. To gain an education in the industry, the owners spent two years traveling to distilleries and talking to experts around the globe. All the while building the distillery, acquiring the required permits and waiting for the stills to arrive.
It took six months of experimentation to produce great, rich whiskey by hand, one batch at a time, but they got there.
With a focus on capturing local flavor and ambience using the resources of local farmers while being mindful of leaving a smaller footprint on the environment, Hudson has thrived.
Named “Best Artisan Distiller of 2010” by the American Distilling Institute, Craft Whiskey Distillery of the Year 2010 by Whiskey Magazine; gaining a score of 92/100 from The Tasting Panel and featuring as one of the ‘Best New American Whiskies’ by Food and Wine Magazine; Hudson is a secret that won’t be kept quiet for long.
