About the brand

Formed in the late 19th century and closed for over a century due to the start of Prohibition, Kentucky Owl's story is a rather unusual one. Not many bourbon distilleries are resurrected after such a long hiatus, but Kentucky Owl rose from the ashes in 2010 and has been producing some of the finest, most full-bodied bourbon whiskeys this decade. Increasingly popular and with newfound cult status, the future is bright for this budding historical brand.

Gotten the opportunity to converse with a Kentucky Owl rep. From my notes its a mix of four whiskeys matured six eight ten and twelve years. Pleasantly offset with some smoke and vanilla. Layers of flavor including cherry and anise/licorice? Some bready perhaps graham saltine. Long get done with an arrival of vanilla and cinnamon. Id purchase once more.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Hints of aged oak mingle with light caramel and leather. Delicate and understated, it’s interesting, and signals towards the whiskey being aged longer than I would have expected.

Taste

A nicely rounded mouthfeel delivers graham crackers, tobacco, and seasoned oak. The flavors are delicate here as they were in the nose, leaning away from sweeter flavors towards the savory side of the scale.

Finish

Slightly bitter, the finish turns towards a dry leather note at first. Cinnamon spice picks up later, bringing a satisfying pop of spice. Aged oak caps it off. It’s a long, complex, and surprisingly enjoyable finish.
