Clynelish 17 Year Old 1996 vintage Highland single malt Scotch whisky. Single cask refill hogshead bottled 2014 by Edition Spirits for the First Editions series. Clynelish Distillery is located on the A9 at the popular coastal holiday town of Brora, Sutherland, around one hour north of Inverness. With beautiful views of the North Sea and the hills to the north – where the Clynemilton burn runs over seams of gold in the rock. With this water, Clynelish distillery produces a fruity, waxy, slightly smoky single malt. While in Sutherland, learn about the history of the Highland Clearances at the nearby Timespan Museum in Helmsdale; or visit the beautiful Dunrobin Castle, home to the Clan Sutherland and the home of the first Duke of Sutherland, who built Clynelish Distillery. Sutherland is also a haven for golfers, with the world famous links courses of Brora, Royal Dornoch, Tain and Golspie. Brora Golf Course looks across to the distillery, so why not visit for a dram after a round of golf. Clynelish Distillery is a perfect stop for those going on to John O’ Groats or Orkney from Inverness, being almost exactly halfway. About the brand

The First Editions range of single barrel expressions is always released at natural cask strength, and of course without colouring or chill filtration. As the name may suggest, each cask is carefully selected to evoke the qualities of a rare literary volume – those of character and collectability. Colour-coding on the labels denotes the particular regions the whiskies themselves are from and each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a gift tube. A “First Editions” bottling without doubt makes a valuable addition to anyone’s whisky library.

Tasting Notes

Nose

fresh, fruity profile. Gooseberries, peach, kumquats. Some floral notes as well, summery grass. Nicely balanced with slightly sharper notes of minerals, ginger and a seaside breeze. Waxy notes. What sets it apart is a clear, sweet butter milk note, interesting. Complex and pleasant.

Taste

punchy, slightly sweet at first (lemon liqueur) but quickly showing its spicy side (pepper, liquorice, ginger). Some garden herbs and again a mineral touch. Hay and a little paraffin. Citrus zest.

Finish

long, with some salty, lemony and grassy elements.
